I've seen and heard many musicians express a lot of beef they have with Facebook and their apparent exploitation of Facebook Pages belonging to bands/artists/musicans/etc.
In fact I'm sure we've all seen (and perhaps even posted) screenshots of abysmal statistics concerning "Facebook reach" - posts being seen by 2 or 3 people, as opposed to the several hundred people that "like"/"follow" your Page.
It's a really clever tactic being played by Facebook: they are deliberately making musicians pay for the visibility that they themselves are responsible for curating.
While I do think Facebook is being rather selfish in this tactic, I don't think we should be complaining too much about it. While we are somewhat responsible for the community of fans that have formed around our various bands and projects, the platform of Facebook itself, which illustrates these communities, does NOT particularly belong to us.
That being said, can Facebook just merely be seen as being like public bus transit with a fare that needs to be paid?
Should we be complaining? Should we just "walk to work" and stop taking the Facebook bus?
Just exactly how much weight does a "facebook like/fan" carry? Would fans truly make an effort to stay in touch with bands other than relying on Facebook to maintain connections?
